Q&A

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

unfold fold
We work to fixed quotes as much as possible. This means that the price quoted for the specific work proposed will not change. This provides you with predictability. We do charge for on-site estimates, but free ballpark estimates and potential budgets will be discussed prior to a site visit.

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

unfold fold
We would first hope for a brief outline of your project with reference photos of similar things or areas to be repaired/remodeled via email or text message. We would also want to talk through realistic budgets to make sure expectations align with reality. Then we would set up a site meeting to talk through your ideas and make a plan from there depending on the project scope. However, we are flexible!

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

unfold fold
I (Caleb, operations manager) have worked full time in trades for around 25 years, primarily carpentry. I have done finish carpentry, exterior carpentry, and problem solving on many high-end homes. I am an expert problem solver and can often do completely new tasks at a very high efficiency level. I also have CAD skills and can design your project in an effective way to make sure that your vision is what we build.

How did you get started doing this type of work?

unfold fold
I worked as a painter in High School and College anytime I wasn't in class, a friend of my dad's had a painting company and the pay was better than Subway. I moved to Portland to pursue a music degree and quickly realized that wasn't right for me, and got a job working at a large cabinet shop and I have been hooked on building things ever since.

What types of customers have you worked with?

unfold fold
We have worked both with custom home builders and with homeowners on custom builds and remodels.

Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

unfold fold
The one I am most proud of recently is that we were tasked with building 4 large barn-style doors as a wind management solution on a balcony patio. The doors had to fit on an 8 inch wide beam and we had to custom fabricate hardware because of the fine clearances. We fabricated the doors to match existing siding on the home and installed them with almost no problems. That was about a 3 week project, although that happened over 6 weeks among other things we had going on.

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

unfold fold
If I made a career change and I was looking for a contractor to work on my house, these are things I would look for: - Someone that seems trustworthy and has integrity. - Someone that is going to deal with problems in a practical way and will be able to communicate about any problems in a mature and respectful way - Never the cheapest contractor. I have had to repair work many times that was done by the "cheaper" contractors and it has resulted in costing the clients more than they would have spent to have it done right the first time - Someone who has their early process well organized. If a contractor is organized when you first speak with them that suggests they will be organized through the project as well. If a contractor is chaotic when you first meet them, it's very likely they will be chaotic through your project - Someone who is knowledgeable about the job I am asking to have done. For example if I was hiring a contractor to build a deck, I would expect them to be able to answer questions about things like the pros and cons of wood vs composite, or to have a good understanding of how railing systems work. - Last but not least, I would want someone who I would be comfortable around my family and that would only have employees I would be comfortable around my family, and that I wouldn't be worried about something at my house going missing while they are working.

What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

unfold fold
When you have an idea for your project, in addition to the main project I would categorize your desires into 3 categories: - "Non negotiable" - "Desired but flexible" - "Would be nice" This will help us tailor your project to your budget. Other than that, questions are highly specific to projects so just give us a shout and we can always give you homework to do!
